Hoarder House

I guess most of us have watched those shows on TV about hoarders. It is a disorder that people suffer from and probably very much the ones that are forced to live with a hoarder. When we were in Alabama visiting our friends we went for a walk one day and our friend pointed out a nice house in the neighborhood that belonged to someone having hoarding problems.

The house looked perfectly normal and neat from the outside but nothing prepared me for what I saw when peeking in through a crack in the blinds. The thing was also that we were able to go up to the house and take a sneak peek as the hoarder family that the house belonged to had moved into another house and very rarely came to this house. I was even more deeply chocked when we went around to the back to the upper deck where not all the blinds were shut and one got a more proper view into the kitchen. OMG! I had never ever seen anything like this before. The entire place was covered (floors, counters, cabinets) with trash, waste and stuff. I can't even begin to imagine what that home must smell like inside.

The most chocking part for me is probably that this is a nice house, a big house. A great house in a really nice neighborhood that is left in this condition to rot and fall apart. These people really have a serious hording problem considering that they had to move out and buy yet another house to live in as they could no longer fit into this one and again I am not talking about a small house (this is about a 500-700 square meter home). The junkyard they have created is a very expensive junkyard. This could be a dream home and instead it is just falling apart. It is so crazy. And for a neat freak like I am this just makes no sense at all. Again I know hoarding is a disorder but when it does get to a certain point you need to get help.

Neighbors know about the house but as long as it is maintained and the outside standards are kept the home association can't do anything about it. The owners refuse to sell it. I think it such a shame for the house, for the neighborhood. Probably the couple owning the house must both have hoarding problems. I will just never forget what I saw in there.

The house above on the picture is not the one mentioned in this blog post. It is a house in Alabama but it is not the hoarder house.

Kram!
