Saturday morning we drove with friends to the slopes above the tiny town of Beckenried located not far from Lutzern (middle part of Switzerland). You could tell that it was going to be a beautiful day as soon as we woke up. The air was clear, cold and crisp. The white smoke from the chimmeny's rising in the early morning air.
Such a treat to get a full day of sunshine like this after the many gray days that we just had. We left Basel shortly before 10 am in the morning and 1.5 hours late I was standing here admiring this very view.
From the village center we took the cable car up to the top of the mountain. The village becoming a tiny dot below located just by the lake. The ride up the mountain with the cable car took about 5 minutes.
White powdery slopes and beautiful peaks stretching out into the horizon. Just like stepping into a picture perfect Toblerone commercial.
Here we are getting ready for the activity of the day being, sledging. This is a major sport in Switzerland that is very popular as well. Each sledge is large enough for two people. Me and C rented ours here but A and C had their own of course as well as K and B. Three sledges and three teams competing with each other down the slopes. Being two on each sledge makes it more fun.
The ride down is long enough so that you don't have to carry the sledges up and down several times or take the cable car gondola more than once. Once we reached the top the total length of the slope was 9 km! You are able to ride most part of it. There are a few parts that were too flat for riding where we had to pull the sledges. It was pretty cold so and sitting on the sledge does not warm you up so the parts where we had to walk a bit were welcomed.
This was my very first time going sledging. Parts of the ride got a little bumpy and there is just no cushioning for your poor butt on these wooden sledges. We had a lot of fun. The first part going downhill was kind of wobbly with a few minor incidents and accidents but C did well and steered like a pro after a short while.
Some of the best moments are also taking breaks. There are these cute log houses that serve simple food and a various hot and cold drinks. Sitting outside soaking up the sunshine and enjoying a coffee just makes life feel so good! Life is good here no, I take that back, life is perfect as you sit here.
Back at the parking lot at the village center where we parked our cars. From here we just had a few hundred meters to the cable car taking us up the mountain.
Returned home happy and in total bliss after a full day outside in the sunshine and fresh air. Switzerland is just such a beautiful country. I feel so lucky living here and being able to enjoy days like these ones with friends. Hopefully winter will be able to offer us many more days like this. There is just no better way to enjoy the outdoors and get plenty of sunshine.
