We sure have been busy celebrating the Swiss national day. It has been a ton of fun. So much going on! The Swiss sure know how to celebrate and make a great day out of their national day celebration. Even if the national day was August 1:st on Thursday the celebrations started here in Basel already on Wednesday evening with festivities and fireworks.
Sausages and grilling. Lot's of it going on everywhere. The Swiss are equally crazy about their sausages as they are about their cheese (no perhaps they love the cheese a little more after all).
These are not the tiny sausages. They are big and come in all kinds of sorts.
I have never ever seen so many people out by the Rhine before. It was as if everyone living in Basel was here at this location this evening. I actually think that was very possible. People gathered well on time to secure a spot for the firework show that was starting at 11 pm.
At 10 pm they did did pre-fireworks of some sort. Our friend Andreas that is from Bern and is Swiss told us that these drifting lights are donations of some kind. Each little pink light that flutters off into the dark sky is a donation for some cause. Very beautiful to see them fly off higher into the sky like twinkling little stars in a steady flow. It continued for about 20 minutes.
At 11 pm sharp the firework show started. What a show! Two large boats had been parked in the river. One of each side of the old middle bridge. Here is where the firework show took place. It was really fantastic and very impressive.
It must cost a fortune as it went on for exactly 30 minutes. The ooh's and aah's did not stop from the audience. This was really cool!
Getting ready and getting all the gear ready. Inflating the boats.
This is what the river looked like! Totaly amazing with it's emerald green water and as you looked over your shoulder you had the most amazing views over the snow capped alps.
Wow, wow, wow. Again I told myself that Switzerland must be one of the most beautiful counties. Again one of those picture perfect postcard views.
Yay! We are out on the river in our little vessel having a blast! This was the perfect way to spend a hot summer day. The river rafting from Thun to Bern took about 4 hours.
Half way a long the trip we stopped and set up a camp fire for some sausage grilling and some picknick.
A total blast. So awesome! Parts of the river demanded more action and attention as we passed some smaller rapids but for the most part one could just enjoy the river, the views, and swimming whenever you needed to cool off a little. Here are Andreas and Constance and we say THANK YOU for taking us a long on this and introducing us to the Swiss national sport of river rafting on national day.
Lot's of people enjoying the river and the day off in various ways.
Our rafting tour ended in Bern. Such a pretty capital. Me and C realized that we have to come to Bern and stroll around and take in more of the sights here.
Today is going to be a hot day in Basel with temperatures reaching 35 C. Tonight we are having a friend over for some BBQ and tomorrow we are taking the train early to Lugano to pick up our new car. So exited about that.
What are you up to this weekend?
